What is Scott Pooler Doing Now? – Part 1 – Bonanzle and BonanzleStore

This is the first in a series I would like to call "What is Scott Doing Now"?

It seems that I have "gone missing", people ask me where have I been, what am I doing?  Well, I have been busy and have not had the time required to keep this and many of my other blogs current.

I love my Trading Assistant Journal readers just as much as I hope they appreciate me, and in fact I want to thank the readers who have sent me notes of concern, wishing me well, and asking me to come back.  I am still here, I just have been so busy working for clients and on my own projects, that I have not had time to keep up with a lot of the stuff I used to comment on here in the Journal.

So without further adieu, Part 1 - "What is Scott Doing Now"?

BonanzleStore

BonanzleStore Opening Late Summer 2009

BonanzleStore Opening Late Summer 2009

In our vast eCommerce world Bonanzle.com has been one of the hottest topics of discussion for over a year now .

As a venue Bonanzle has many advantages for sellers.

Simplicity, Social interaction, seller camaraderie, ease of use, customer service from the founder himself... Bonanzle has a lot to like.

When a new merchant comes to Bonanzle from eBay or elsewhere, they are usually struck with the speed and ease of use of this well laid out platform.  From the very first day of operations, this site has been clean and quick both on the front end and on the back end where merchants spend most of their time.

The speed of listing product, either one at a time, or through a bulk upload and then a bulk editor (both included) is a major factor attracting merchants familiar with the multiple page listing processes of eBay. This simplicity and speed are major factors that can improve the bottom line of any seller.  The fact that there are no listing fees and only a small final value fee - if an item is sold, is another top pick on the feature list at Bonanzle.com.

Sellers are joining Bonanzle by the thousands, the growth curve of Bonanzle has been phenomenal - some say... even faster than the original eBay.

Yet with all of the great features of Bonanzle, and there are many, it struck me that the one thing that was missing from the merchant experience at Bonanzle was a home base or store. Come to think of it, at eBay the "eBayStores" product has never been a real home base or place to build a business for merchants. I say this, even though I was at one time an eBay stores promoter, designer and owner, because at eBay you had no way to bring your customer back to you.  The entire eBay Stores strategy was sold to promote the idea that a merchant could have that "home base" but in reality the home was just a temporary shelter - with high fees.

If you are starting or running an online business selling products, unless you are happy to be anonymous, it is best to build a "location" on the net. A Storefront or a business office so to speak.  A Place where your customers, new and old, can find you, and find out more about you and your business.  A place where, as a business owner, you can choose to educate the public (your customers) with more information than is included in a standard description of a product for sale.

Now I don't want to say that at Bonanzle there is no "Store". Bonanzle's "store" is called a booth. A Bonanzle Booth is a central location grouping all of your listed products together by category. The booth is great, but since it is dedicated to the Bonanzle tenants of simplicity and clean design (something I do not disagree with), a Bonanzle Booth does not lend itself to merchant branding or education of the public or much of anything more than presenting the merchants products, with 4 images and a very clean description to the outside world.  For many merchants, this may be all that they need.  For others, something a little more personal may be appropriate.

Late Summer 2009

Late Summer 2009

As a result, my company, iBusinessLogic has created a new way to optimize a Bonanzle merchants business and Internet marketing capabilities with what we call the BonanzleStore.

A "BonanzleStore" (launching late summer 2009) is an outside website, separated from Bonanzle and allowing the merchant to brand themselves with a completely customized eCommerce Web 2.0 Site.  This website (A BonanzleStore) will include many features never seen before in eCommerce. Bonanzle Action Club Controversy – Evil Empire or Just Grass Roots Social Marketing

There is a controversy brewing and this time it is not really about eBay - or is it?

It seems that Debbie Levitt CEO of ASWAS, an eBay Stores designer and consulting company based in Boston, MA and a personal friend, has come out very strongly against the grass roots marketing efforts of Bonanzle.com.  A Prominent blogger and also a friend, Henrietta of the Red Ink Diary has responded quite directly to Debbie's take on the Bonanzle Action Club.

Henrietta has been a friend to Bonanzle.com since the beginning, I don't think she is a member of the BAC, but could be. It is a pretty small club of only 50 people when weighed against the 30,000 members of Bonanzle.  Yet the effects of its political style grass roots effort to get out the word about the site seem to have gained some attention in eBay circles (where Debbie Levitt is a big swimmer).

The Article on the Red Ink Diary is available for all to read in its entirety here Red Ink Diary.  I have included a short quote below to give you the idea of where Henrietta stands. (Note: Links to the articles Debbie Levitt wrote in the ASWAS blog are included, just as they appeared in the Red Ink Diary.) I don't know if I would have been quite as direct as Henrietta was in her post, but she expressed her point without leaving any doubt.

External Industry Perception – Opinion Matters – eBay

My recent schedule has taken me away from the deep depths of eBay polices and events. This can be a good thing... Anytime one can take a step back and look at life and business from a different perspective, I believe they should seize the opportunity.

My most recent sojourn into the world outside of eBay took me to the very interesting, yet almost unknown, industry of automotive recycling.

Yes, I know... most of us non-recyclers call it by a different name and frankly we rarely think about the positive impact on our environment and economy that auto recycling, or what we call  "Junkyards" (bad word inside the industry) has in America.

At first I did not "get" why the term "Junkyards" was considered not-PC (Politically Correct), but after attending the 65th annual Automotive Recyclers Association convention and expo in Kansas City, Missouri, I have a much better understanding.

Automotive recycling as an industry has come a long way in technology, in standards and most importantly in environmental protection since this national organization was formed in 1943.

From systems designed to extract every ounce of fluid from a wrecked vehicle to machines which automatically extract copper from the miles of wires in every car while saving the plastic insulation for re-use, the technology changes have been enormous.  I personally was amazed at the live demonstrations held at Midway Auto Parts in Kansas City on chilly evening during the exposition.

The yard was clean and extraordinarily well organized, all of the wrecked vehicles had been sorted and were laid out in various stages of the recycling process. No huge stacks of rusty hulks in this yard, most all of the cars I saw represented recent model years, they even had a used car lot in the front of the operation with some very clean looking late model automobiles. This place looked more like a new car dealership than what previously ill-informed outsiders like myself might have called it. This was a recycling facility, not a "Junk yard"

I have to agree with the new terminology, there was no presence of "Junk" here. This was pure recycling, down to the last ounce of steel. I was told this is not uncommon in the new era of auto recycling.  It seems that with the right combination of technology and training more of an automobile or truck can be recycled than ever before.  The industry as a whole has seen, both from a profit and from the environmental impact perspective, modernizing is the only way to excel.

By now my regular readers are wondering where eBay enters into all of this?

I was invited to this convention by a client who also happens to be an eBay Powerseller.

Taia Cesana

Taia Cesana - East Coast eCommerce Manager

The eBay connection starts with Taia Cesana of East Coast Auto Salvage. Taia hired my company iBusinessLogic to build a new website for their family owned auto recycling facility in Higganum, Connecticut. I met Taia at the Channel Adviser Catalyst conference in North Carolina. We have worked together on a plan to upgrade both East Coast's eBay sales operations and their website since Catalyst.

Taia and her dad Bill are very active members of both the ARA and CAR (Connecticut Auto Recyclers Association)associations. iBusinessLogic is now building a new website for CAR as a direct result of our work on the East Coast site.

Taia and Bill of East Coast Auto Salvage believe in finding the best solutions for industry challenges.

One of the challenges in the auto recycling industry is perception.  The best way to combat problems with perception is with information. Today's information leader is the Internet and building an information rich website is no longer a luxury for any business, it is a necessity.

Many of the websites auto recycling yards present to the public are developed by the industry leading inventory solutions providers. These include Hollander, Car-Parts.com and Inventory Technology Systems among others.

The original East Coast Auto Salvage site was provided by ITS.  Taia Cesana wanted to provide a more modern look and offer much more information on the East Coast Auto Salvage website than a parts search and location engine. Yet without the parts location and inventory searches provided by ITS and Car-Part, her website would not hold much value to her customers.

We solved the problem by simply taking the information served by ITS and inserting it within the new website and we also added an important feature by importing all of the East Coast Auto Salvage's eBay listings directly into their new website.

The new website we developed for East Coast Auto Salvage is designed to not only provide easy access to parts information but also give the public a more comprehensive view of their business in an attractive and straightforward package.  I am very honored Taia and Bill thought enough of the job we did for them to ask us to share our ideas with the rest of the industry.

Back at the convention in Kansas City

I did not expect to find much eBay related news at an Auto Recycling exposition. In fact, it seemed when I mentioned eBay to any of the attendees or exhibitors on the expo floor, the tone of the conversations almost immediately became suspicious.  I was not selling eBay, I simply was asking how or if any of these businesses were integrating eBay as a sales venue for the massive amount of used automotive, truck and motorcycle parts they had on hand.

The overall impression seemed to be that eBay was a mysterious and unknown quantity. These business people, all of whom seem to be looking at Internet sales and ecommerce in a new light, were not really sure if eBay could help them sell parts.

As an Industry, I would say that Auto Recyclers could use eBay to a great advantage, if they could just figure out how.

To be honest, many of these cutting edge (in their industry) business people have not yet totally grasped the power of Internet marketing.  Most auto recycling yard websites provide simple location information and a parts location search with very little or no additional information or ecommerce capabilities.  This is a missed marketing opportunity on a massive scale.

It seems that I am not the only person at the exposition who believes eBay could help auto recyclers move used auto parts.

Terry Lindell - VINterchange
Terry Lindell - VINterchange

Terry Lindell of Inventory Technology Systems announced what could be an incredible tool for auto recyclers worldwide in a presentation explaining his new VINterchange inventory system.  VINterchange aims to turn the auto recycling inventory process upside down (or right-side up - depending on your point of view) with a new way to automatically evaluate and inventory the parts from wrecked vehicles.

It is a long story but it seems that the auto recyclers and the auto industry have been working with two entirely different numbering systems and ways of inventorying parts. The VINterchange system is designed to bring the auto recycling industry more in line with OEM manufactures VIN system, providing actual OEM part numbers to the public.

The presentation was jam packed full of information, I will say that as an industry outsider, the new system seemed to make incredible sense from the perspective of an Internet marketer such as myself.  When these recycling yards provide OEM auto part numbers to the public, on the Internet, finding the parts will become much easier for the consumer. Selling those same parts to the world via the Internet will become a vital part of every recyclers business.

My ears really perked up When Terry Lindell transitioned into the eBay portion of his presentation. I have not seen how it works, but apparently ITS's VINterchange system has the capability of automatically populating eBay listings with all of the OEM parts information needed to sell these parts to the public in a fast and efficient manner.  This could revolutionize the used auto parts industry on eBay motors.

I have a net meeting scheduled with ITS to get a first hand look at how this new system will handle uploading parts data to eBay, to tell the truth I am very excited about the possibilities.  I know first hand from East Coast Auto Salvage that these parts move well on eBay yet the time it takes to process the eBay listings is a pain point for Taia Cesana at East Coast.

If ITS has come up with a solution which not only catalogs all of the profitable parts from a wrecked vehicle and assigns those parts the proper OEM part numbers but can also feed eBay and/or eCommerce that same catalog of inventory, I think the used auto parts business will find a much easier path to ecommerce than ever before.

In Summary

  • eBay still suffers a problem of perception, in that it is a painful process to utilize eBay as a sales venue, from established industries such as auto recycling.
  • eCommerce is the next logical step for the Auto Recycling industry
  • It all starts with information and the proper aggregation and display of that information for both eBay and outside industries like auto recycling.
  • If the auto recycling industry continues to develop methods of standardizing information the industry and consumers will both win. In effect parts will become worth more than the price of steel and consumers will buy those parts when they have a clear path to finding them on either Google or eBay.

Flowgram PowerPoint Presentation Tool Beta SNAFU

Yesterday I wrote about a "beta" test of Flowgram ...

Today I would like to report that there is a reason why these types of nifty programs are beta tested. Of course I was fascinated with the opportunities this program represented, and they still exist, just a few "bugs" need to be worked out first...

After I uploaded my first Flowgram iBusinessLogic Web Development Projects 2008 admittedly late in the night, when I should not have been working... I tried to get fancy by using some of the other interesting capabilities of the Flowgram service.

Flowgram has a connection with Flickr , which in therory allows the user to insert photos and graphics from Flickr into any Flowgram at any point in the slideshow. Wow, what a great time saver, since I already use Flickr it was something I really wanted to try.

I should have started a new Flowgram presentation to try this feature.

Apparently the developers at Flowgram have not figured out that Flickr allows the organization of photos into sets. When I used the Flowgram interface to navigate to one of my images in Flickr I simply selected the set of photos I wanted to find the individual picture within. Flowgram decided I wanted to upload all of the photos in that particular set (over 160 images) to my already finished presentation.

Before I realized what was happening, Flowgram had imported over 90 of those images to the presentation. This would not have been a serious problem, had I been able to delete these new slides created by the program from my Flickr images... Unfortunately, the number of graphics imported was too much for the web based interface of Flowgram, and the program would not allow me any access to these new slides. I could tell they were there, but I could not remove them, move them or do anything with them.

This was a problem, since the presentation was live on this blog and in other places.

The images were not private or racy but they just did not fit in with my presentation. I could not delete the entire Flowgram because I had spent a considerable amount of time recording narrations for each slide I did want presented.

I apologize to anyone who viewed the test Flowgram I created and came to the end only to find numerous images which did not fit in. The presentation has been corrected now (by simple luck and trying 4 different browsers), so the odd images are now removed.

My voice is still there, (if thats a good thing) and the images of our current projects are still there... (Although some do not display correctly now, and to change an image after audio has been recorded, one must also re-create the audio after the new screenshot slide has been created). Some way should be devised to keep the audio and images saved as seperate files so new images could be inserted under the same audio.

Needless to say, this is a free beta test for me, and I find the idea of the Flowgram service fascinating and possibly very useful for business and web use. But without fixing these issues, or allowing a way to save versions of a presentation without over writing the whole thing, it may be an iffy proposition to use this on a daily basis.

When the beta test is complete, I am sure the program will be much improved.

iBusinessLogic Projects – Flowgram – New Presentation Tool Beta Test

iBusinessLogic Web Development Projects 2008

Above is an example of a "Flowgram" http://flowgram.com

I have been invited to beta test the web application which allows the user to insert live web pages into a slide show with your recorded narration.  I plan on using Flowgram to create step . slide show instructions for AuctionLogic in addition to back end instruction on blog management and post creation.

The first presentation above runs a bit long, (it was my first time as a narrator) but I think it gives a straightforward idea of just one way that Flowgrams could be used.  Seeing the progression of slides representing the web development projects we are working on at iBusinessLogic Corporation (and have completed this year), really gives a good idea of how hard we have been working at iBusinessLogic on web and blog development.  One interesting aspect of the Flowgram is I can go back and add a slide at anytime and it will then be presented to whomever has imported this presentation on their website in the future.

Flowgram can be exported directly to places like Facebook and WordPress among others or a direct link is available after creation.  This may not work quite like paid solutions such as Cametasia where the narrators mouse and live interactions are recorded on the screen but it is still a valuable tool for showing PowerPoint style presentations with audio.  Being free (for now), is just a plus!

(Side Note: if you saw this post with only a link, I apologize.  I set this to import directly from Flowgram to WordPress last night and when it did not appear right away I assumed the export/import had failed and went to bed.  Apparently it takes about three hours to propagate - keep that in mind when you export your FLowgrams directly to your blog, you may have to go back and check for the post created and add some text content to explain the link.)

eBay Live 2008 Chicago To Do List – Are you ready?

ebay live Speakers, Seth Godin, Jay Berkowitz

eBay Live 2008 in Chicago is just around the corner - Next week eBay and eCommerce buyers, merchants, software and solutions vendors, marketplace merchants, media and of course the normal crowd or crazed eBay fans will be making their way to McCormick center.

What will you be looking for at this, the last eBay Live, possibly ever?

  • News of more changes at eBay? - Rumors abound with possible shocking announcements on the horizon at eBay. Will these changes be announced next week?
  • New Connections? - Are you looking for networking contacts in your niche or related to your business? eBay Live will provide a great opportunity to meet new people and forge long standing relationships with them.
  • Reconnections? - Meet with people who normally only appear in your email or on the telephone.
  • Technology? - Looking for new cutting edge technologies to help your business? Software, Hardware, Shipping Systems or....? Find it on the solutions floor.
  • Ideas? Ideas abound at conventions like this... open up and ask your questions of the merchants and experts and in turn share insights with them. Learning can never end in this or any other business.

Preparations

Are you ready? Prior to arriving at McCormick Center in Chicago I suggest taking a look at the eBay Live 2008 exhibitors list.

Make a list of must see vendors and then make sub lists of questions you want to ask these vendors. Bring your questions list with you - in the rush of the crowd and the flow of the convention traffic sometimes it is difficult to remember who you wanted to see and what you wanted to learn. Crib notes are no problem here.

Here are the vendors I plan on visiting (no particular order): Continue reading “eBay Live 2008 Chicago To Do List – Are you ready?” »

Important Business Considerations – Choosing an eBay Management software suite…

What to look for in eBay &/or Multi-Channel listing management software...

AuctionLogic LogoSoftware is an essential key to all phases of business these days.  Without good solid software and software management, costs and profit can move in opposite directions fast.

"Auction Management software brings sales administration under control by putting a framework around your eBay sales and automating repetitive tasks. Products vary in their breadth, but may include listing, payment, shipping and feedback features. If your products are selling well, but you are struggling to maintain a high level of service, an auction management system may be what you need".

Evaluating eBay Seller Software
By Andy Geldman of Auction Software Review

The recent and ever changing policies at eBay drive home the need for any eBay & eCommerce channel management software to be robust and adaptable at the same time.  Continue reading “Important Business Considerations – Choosing an eBay Management software suite…” »
