Scammed on eBay With the help of PayPal – A Common Sellers Tale in 2009

eBay is sold to the public on many different levels...

  • To the consumer eBay is offered as a great online place to find anything - cheap
  • Consumers are also told what a "safe" and easy place eBay is to shop.

All well and good, in most cases, except for the fact that eBay does not have to stand behind the promises they make to the consumer, eBay leaves that bit of dirty business to the individual seller and they use PayPal as the big stick of enforcement to make sure that the sellers keep the buyers happy, no matter the cost or situation.  (more on that later)

  • To the Individual Seller eBay is offered as the easy and fast way to sell the junk that accumulates in the garage or attic

eBay has been promoted as the place for anyone to start a business (selling junk from your garage) for years.  (More recently eBay went courting the corporate world, offering enticements and sweetheart deals to big sellers like Buy.com and others).  For awhile it looked as though eBay would turn its back on the small individual sellers in lieu of the huge volume possibilities offered by the Buy.coms of the world.

Some eBay Kool Aid?

Some eBay Kool Aid?

Thankfully, eBay has not completely forgotten the little guy, they are happy to take his/her money and they have taken some minor steps to entice the small seller back. To be honest, I still don't understand the "selling junk from the garage" business plan "drink the kool aid" approach, but that must just be me...

2008

2008 was a long year in eBay-land, the changes and turmoil wrought by the eBay executives decisions (right or wrong) made an impression on the rank and file. The effect of these constant changes on eBay's core audience of sellers (the little guys and gals) became more than an annoyance. For some of these smaller sellers the constant state of flux of 2008 - early 2009 ended a long term love affair.

I will admit that my own love affair with eBay ended in 2008.

It was just too frustrating at times, not only dealing with the changes in my own eBay selling business, but also fielding questions from my clients regarding unexplainable and sometimes indefensible new rules or policies and outrageous games with fee structures.  I pretty much shut down all operations on eBay myself and quietly told my good clients that they might want to take a fresh look at eBay, it was time to evaluate whether the price in terms of time, frustration and costs, had possibly become too high for some to do business on eBay.

How many eCommerce Platforms?

This is a simple poll we are running to get a feel for the numbers of merchants exploring the potential of multi channel selling.

Scot Wingo recently revealed that Channel Adviser has over 6000 clients using the CA software platform. We assume the multi-channel selling concept that Scot and CA developed early on has a wider appeal now than it once had when eBay was at its peak.

How many of you are trying new and interesting channels such as Etsy, Bonanzle, Online Auction, Dawdle, or any of the others which have popped up in the last 12 months?  Conversely, how many are sticking just with eBay or your own ecommerce shopping cart website?

We would like to hear from you!

eBay Third Party Providers Experiencing Fall Out? Frooition Loses Managing Director

Recent earnings announcements along with this last years alteration of the core philosophy at eBay seem to have had a negative effect on many of the third party solutions providers who have built businesses upon the foundation eBay created in the late 1990's.

Rumblings and rumors always abound in a industry such as this, but recently changes made at the top levels of some of the most prominent 3rd party providers seems to predict a consolidation and possibly belt tightening within the firms who revolve around and depend upon the eBay brand.

It is true that some new players are entering the market with interesting solutions, software and services yet at the same time, are the executives at older and more established companies making what could be considered exit strategy moves?

From the announcement of a new CEO at Infopia, Coleman Barney, which in and of itself is seen as a move towards new blood and not a barometer an industry crumbling, to the recent departure of the managing director of Frooition, a UK based eBay stores and template design company, changes at the top of several eBay centric service providers seem to be occurring at a faster rate than normal.

I was quite surprised when I noted earlier today that Grenville Wheland had left Frooition and is now seeking new opportunities through LinkedIn (see Below). Grenville had been purported to be one of the financial backers of Frooition and while his skills as a start up entrepreneur were also touted, on the outside we can only wonder if his reasons for departing may have included deeper financial concerns for the future of the business model.

No Longer With Frooition

No Longer With Frooition

Frooition grew very quickly into a multinational marketing powerhouse for eBay based design work and is still strong today yet they have relied upon eBay as the basis of the business strategy for what seems to be too long when branching out into eCommerce was an available avenue for expansion. My readers will know that I have worked with Frooition as a representative in the States since mid 2007, My dealing with Mr Whelan have always been cordial and above board.  I am sure Frooition will notice his departure.

eBay Live 2008 - Karl, Ciz, Grenville Whelan, David Sullivan of Frooition

Channel Adviser, while not changing the steadfast leader of the pack Scot Wingo, has had some major personnel cuts in recent months. As eBay has itself,  a Rolodex or Blackberry full of contacts at eBay in 2007 would be suspiciously empty today.

The industry that has based itself on the largess of this giant we call eBay is morphing into a new animal. Eventually changes beget changes.  While we all wish the likes of Grenville Whelan and Bjorn Espenes of Infopia the best (Bjorn is now the COB), we only have to wonder... who is next?

While riding the gravy train of eBay can be a sound business decicion (at least many of us thought it was), the hard crash at the end of the tracks can be just as abrupt. Other have noted that eBay may be on a uncontrollable death spiral (i.e. Scot Wingo) into the abyss that some great companies (AOL) fall into.

Is it possible that some of these highly placed executives see a bad wind a blowin and have chosen to diversify before the end comes?

I know that even though my heart will always have a place for eBay and I still promote the site and services surrounding its capabailities, I myself have diversified and are very glad that I did.  I no longer depend completely upon eBay as a seller or a service provider.  Having options for myself and my clients is what I am all about now.

Some other service oriented eBay centric companies could take a note...

Small Business on eBay – The Straw That Broke This Cornerstone's Back

Cornerstone Commercial Supply, a name most of my regular readers will remember from articles in the past year is calling it quits on eBay.

Cornerstone is an established small business with over 30 years of quality service dealing with the public. They offer a unique niche product selection which would seemingly be ideal for eBay. Commercial carpet cleaning products, tools, and machines both new and used.

Just as a small bit of background, let it be known that the owners of Cornerstone Commercial Supply are not rich people. They are the father and daughter team of Richard and Connie Carpenter, they both work every day to survive in this difficult economic environment.

Richard Carpenter

Richard Carpenter

Richard Carpenter has been in the Commercial Carpet Cleaning business for over 30 years and as a distributor for over 12 in his present location.  He and his daughter Connie are honest, hard working dedicated people who give the customer a fair shake even when it is not necessary.

I consulted with Cornerstone Commercial Supply to bring them onto eBay as a client of iBusinessLogic in 2007, with the very best of intentions, now I feel as though I owe them an apology for what it is I have done.

It seemed to me to be a perfect match back in the end of 2007.  We researched similar product sales on eBay with advanced eBay research tools. This research revealed a steady and growing market for the professional carpet cleaning products, with competition already established and selling on eBay.   We had a solid plan and in our view, no other carpet cleaning supplier had approached the niche as we would, with a dedicated and well designed eBay store, a full product line, and very competitive pricing, we felt we had a good chance of growing a nice secondary business on eBay for Cornerstone Commercial Supply. eBay Links Policy Revised – Stays the Same – What?

eBay... Yes EBAY listened to sellers...

I know this is a shock,  just breathe deep - Take a moment to comprehend the full meaning of the statement above...

Everyone knows how much and how fervent our opposition was to the "new links policy" from eBay, announced last May.  Here are a few of our articles regarding the links policy changes proposed...

It seems the Trading Assistant Journal was not the only voice making vehement objections to the removal of links from our eBay listings and "me" pages.  And eBay has listened!  The announcement from John McDonald yesterday is a significant victory for eBay sellers and believers in social media marketing everywhere.

Thank You eBay! and Thanks Mr. McDonald!

***A Message from John McDonald – Links Policy News for Sellers***July 31, 2008 | 10:40AM PST/PT

Hello everyone…Back in May, I announced a number of important policy changes for sellers. One of the policies I mentioned was an update to our Links Policy which governs the types of links that can be included in a listing. Our Links Policy is intended to increase safety and preserve the buying experience.

After my announcement, we received questions and concerns from sellers about this change. At eBay Live!, our staff made it clear we would be going back to reconsider some aspects of the policy around how third-party links would be treated.

As promised, we’ve been reviewing all the different types of situations that our sellers have brought to our attention, and we’ve been meeting with additional stakeholders to understand how our policy update would impact them. After this additional research and discussion, we’ve decided to leave our Links Policy as is. There will be no Links Policy updates at this time.
I want to thank our sellers for your support and patience around this matter.

eBay Live 2008 – Thoughts from Atlanta – John Lawson of 3rdPO.com Speaks Out

John LawsonEBay Live? Simply not the best it could be

By John Lawson of 3rd Power Outlet (www.3rdPO.com)

I stayed home and evidently many others did too!

Let me back that up and rewind a bit… See for those who don't know me…I wrote a little blog at the end of the last 2 "eBay centric" events prior to this party. You can check them out by going to http://tinyurl.com/59yq8v.

So I would like to add on to that now that the BIG party is over…literally.

Man, after Catalyst and the PeSA/eCommerce summits the stage was set, eBay made a "killing".  Lorrie Norrington "nailed the speech", eBay execs came and stood toe to toe, they said "we are listing", "good feedback", "give us a chance", sound familiar?…err shall I go on?

Why, thank you, I think I shall…

The sellers stood up and demanded clarity on changes on feedback, some could not help but protest the real world impact, while others simply whined (you know I am telling the truth). At the end of it all, we felt that something good was blowing in the wind. I got that "Obama" feeling of change, LMAO. It was an Oprah moment with a new since of purpose.

Fast forward to the approach of eBay Live 2008... everybody kept asking me if I were going? I just did not feel like I wanted to go.

But then they announced, No eBay Live 2009, see ya in 2010…WTH? Huh? Continue reading “eBay Live 2008 – Thoughts from Atlanta – John Lawson of 3rdPO.com Speaks Out” »

eBay Heroes – Another eBay Live Cutesy Theme, Gone Awry

eBay HeroeseBay Live is always a little kooky...

Scot Wingo woke me up to that fact in his blog post this morning about the newest eBay Live 2008 theme:

eBay Heroes

Scot characterises the depiction of these "heroes" in his article, so I won't go there...

What I see here is a company which can not seem to craft a cohesive message.

To me, eBay Live should always be, first and foremost, a place to get business done and to learn about the business of selling and buying on eBay.

This year, with the changes in upper management, I thought I had heard a new more business like tone being projected from the altar.

Apparently that tone is just a puff of hot air...

If the message is big business merchandising and improvement of the buyer experience, I would think eBay would start by improving the seller experience at this, the last ever eBay Live.

In the past, one of my main gripes about eBay Live was that it seemed to be run by the same people who organize frat house parties and volleyball tournaments.  Continue reading “eBay Heroes – Another eBay Live Cutesy Theme, Gone Awry” »

Announcement Kills eBay as a Business Venue! eBay Me Page Dead! Oh What a Wicked Web

Oh, what a wicked web eBay weaves...

eBay seems to think if they toss some carrots, no one will notice when they toss a poison pill in an "announcement".

Today's announcement should cause a great deal of concern for any business oriented sellers...

How do we get leads from eBay?

By branding our eBay presence and through the only page available on eBay to direct traffic to our own websites...

The eBay me page...

This is why most any advanced eBay seller uses eBay... Not because of the fees or the hassles, but for the traffic...

Today, eBay apparently has removed this incentive. It is too soon to evaluate this statement completely, but I see this most recent restriction as a very large mistake by eBay.

Why? - Because....

Who will stay when the me page links are restricted?

Especilally when eBay is allowing Yahoo Advertising to market to our customers on our listings...

What is the good news? Why oh Why?

Here is the statement in its entirety... Continue reading “Announcement Kills eBay as a Business Venue! eBay Me Page Dead! Oh What a Wicked Web” »

Finding eBay Consignment Help – New eBay Trading Assistant Directory – Not So New

The eBay Trading Assistant program was re-engineered several months ago.  eBay, in fact, started the recent round of controversial announcements (Fees, Feedback, DSRs tied to fee discounts, No more digital delivery, etc) with the summary and unexpected changes to the Trading Assistant system.  REDOL

  • Trading Posts had been renamed as REDOL's (?).
  • REDOL (Drop Stores and TA's with actual business locations) were saddled with increased insurance requirements that initially contained unattainable coverage requirements.
  • The word "Auction" has been banned by eBay as part of any private business name, signage or included in advertising...except, strangely enough, for use as an eBay account name.
  • Legal liability shifted completely onto the small business owners selling consignment items in the eBay system.

We reviewed the terms of the new program here at the Trading Assistant Journal.  Continue reading “Finding eBay Consignment Help – New eBay Trading Assistant Directory – Not So New” »
