Dead Reckoning – Navigation Technique or Sound Business Planning ?

Dead Reckoning Navigation

Dead Reckoning Navigation

n.

1. A method of estimating the position of an aircraft or a ship without astronomical observations, as by applying to a previously determined position the course and distance traveled since.
2. Predictive calculation based on inference; guesswork.

It seems that I am following a theme here, the nautical analogy series here on the TAJ!

OK- So what is he talking about now?  Last time it was an article about the "Center of Effort" and now I bring up a term like Dead Reckoning?

Am I home sick for my days at sea? Well ya, actually I am...

But more than that, I seem to be thinking about how these seemingly different worlds of business and seafaring can learn and adapt useful knowledge and therories  from one another.  After all the first international trade over long distances was carried out by sailing ship captains. Business has always been a part of seafaring, I wonder... how can looking at the basics of seafaring benefit business?

What is Dead Reckoning?

What on the surface first appears as such an ominous term, is in fact an ancient method of finding ones way on the ocean, land or in the air.  Before electronic navigation methods (including the now ever present Global Position System) and without the training to use of a sextant for celestial observations, Dead Reckoning was the only way for Captains, Explorers and Airplane pilots to find their way across the vast expanses of our Earth.

The Dead Reckoning method of navigation is boiled down to knowing where one started and where one wants to eventually arrive,  then updating the progress of the trip frequently along the way. The progress is updated with position "fixes" derived from observations, speed, current and wind estimates, and good old fashioned guesswork.  If a "pilot" or "navigator" kept his track updated frequently and applied good guesswork and was reasonable in his/her estimating, he/she would find themselves at the destination intended and the voyage, trek or flight would end safely.

Finding the New World

Finding the New World

Christopher Columbus found the New World in 1492 using very similar Dead Reckoning techniques that I myself learned as a very young man in the early 1970's (very young indeed). The Ancient Polynesians sailed to the far reaches of the Pacific, some say all the way to Mexico and even Alaska by using these techniques.  Using position updating and good estimates of progress is a system that many cultures in all parts of the World have developed independently to find their way to new and exciting destinations.

Business Plan

How do you find your way in business?

All businesses should have a plan... many actually start with a real honest to goodness published business plan. I am sure someone along the way has mentioned using a business plan to you if and when you first contemplated starting and running your own small business. How many of you actually maintain that plan as it was created and intended? If you do not have one and we all know who you are... Get started making a business plan, it is never too late!

Suggestion: Look around, it is possible the actual plan from when you started the business is hidden, tucked away in a drawer or file somewhere - never to be seen again...

Dig it UP

Is Yours Dusty?

Is Yours Dusty?

Dig out your business plan, if you have one, and dust it off... Take a look at what you thought you wanted from your business, how you imagined it would progress and what observations lead you to the conclusions you put down on paper.  Now, it's time to take a "fix" (Nautical term meaning mark your position from known data).

Get a Fix

Smart business owners get a fix on their position regularly along the way during the journey that is a businesses life.  All businesses start from a known position and it is possible you have been traveling through uncharted waters ever since.

Did you ever take a "fix" and update your business plan?

With a "fix" you can make adjustments to the plan, alter the course of travel and ultimately find your way to the destination that you now remember having in mind when you first put the plan to paper.  Dead Reckoning your business along a path to prosperity is a sound and age old way to make sure that the plan does not go off course.  Without regular position checks and corroborating information, no business owner will know if he/she is progressing safely or falling off course.

Conditions Change

In any journey, especially those that last as long as it takes to build a profitable business, conditions change.  On a voyage it could be the weather, or the current or a torn sail.  In business it could be interest rates or the economy or in the case of a lot of my readers... some other entity - say - like eBay changing their business plan and effecting your safe journey to prosperity.  Strong navigators, captains and business owners all have the ability to adjust to new and more difficult situations within the span of a single voyage.  These successful people know that nothing ever remains the same and they are prepared to adapt, endure and to overcome.

What separates the winners from the losers is how a person reacts to each new twist of fate.

Center of Effort

Center of Effort

Center of Effort

Checking your Dead Reckoning position along the way in your business plan also allows you to have a more complete picture and get a handle on the "Center of Effort" concept I wrote about before.  Keeping all parts of the plan balanced and working together encourages efficiency and increases the chances of prosperity.  Without a regular update on all aspects of your business, how can you adjust the varying factors that allow for a center of effort condition to exist? Everything you do in business should work towards one common goal - success!

Dead Reckoning Your Way...

... through business, life, and through each of our journeys on this earth is the most reliable way to reach any destination safely. Finding out and marking where it is that you are now,  ultimately allows you to get to where you want to be in the future.

The only real difference is time, effort and vigilence.

How many eCommerce Platforms?

This is a simple poll we are running to get a feel for the numbers of merchants exploring the potential of multi channel selling.

Scot Wingo recently revealed that Channel Adviser has over 6000 clients using the CA software platform. We assume the multi-channel selling concept that Scot and CA developed early on has a wider appeal now than it once had when eBay was at its peak.

How many of you are trying new and interesting channels such as Etsy, Bonanzle, Online Auction, Dawdle, or any of the others which have popped up in the last 12 months?  Conversely, how many are sticking just with eBay or your own ecommerce shopping cart website?

We would like to hear from you!

SUPERBOWL Traffic Test – eBay vs Bonanzle Completed – Who Won?

I am so sorry, the Superbowl package is no longer available!

The listings were removed from eBay and Bonanzle this morning at 9AM EST.

SuperBowl Traffic Test

SuperBowl Traffic Test

As anyone who has done consignment listings of such short lived merchandise knows, this is a hectic way to make a living!  In actuality I am glad it is over, now I can simply enjoy the big game.

Results?

Oh, Yes - Results...

The results of our very un-scientific traffic test with all the variables mentioned and discussed in the previous articles comments section...

Indicate one clear and overwhelming winner.

But first, lets talk about some of the comments...

My buddy John Lawson AKA ColderIce seems to think the mention of the traffic test in this blog will skew the results enough to make them useless.  I simply do not understand that line of thinking because both links were provided here with equal access. As such they have an equal chance to draw traffic from this source and in even though in effect both listings results were elevated from this article, I would assume they would be elevated equally.  This is what I do, it is my business, I promote the idea that by blogging about what it is you sell or offer the public, will in turn increase the chances of selling that thing or service.  Therefore I will not apologize for doing what comes naturally -

I sell, therefore I blog!

Just a Thought presented the point that the exact same html should have been used in both listings... Hmmm, that may be possible in the description area, and in fact the words used to describe the item(s) for sale were exactly the same, but there is no way I can manipulate the eBay system to make it look like Bonanzle or Visa-Versa.  I mean, I am good, but not that good.  I also use a listing management tool on eBay called AuctionSound and it would be a real pain to remove all of my standard eBay template information for one listing.  This standard information appears in all of my eBay listings and as such makes them standard eBay listings.  We are comparing standard eBay vs standard Bonanzle, are we not? While a true A/B test run by a Internet advertising consulting firm would never have the same exact content, I guess it could have been done here to prove some point - what?

OK - Now for the Results....

Drum Roll Please

oh, and Congratulations Bonanzle for hitting a milestone this week with One Million Listings

The results are as follows - with both listings being online approximately the same amount of time (within seconds).

  • eBay = 95 hits to the SuperBowl Beach House Vacation and 4 Ticket Package

  • Bonanzle = 197 hits to the same package listed on their new and very SEO friendly website!

Roughly twice as much traffic, from various sources went to Bonanzle.  Is this a scientific result? No... Does it tell a story about the possibilities on new and exciting venues, yes!  Does it mean you should pack up your business and move it to Bonanzle?  That is your business decision, I would never recommend anyone leave eBay without first knowing what the new location will do for them.  Keep your sales humming, if they are, on eBay... But it never hurts to take a look next door!

By the way - Neither site sold the package - My client pulled the offer and went to the Georgia Mountains to get away from Superbowl craziness...

11 Most Commonly Suggested ways to Make Money on eBay and why you should Avoid most of them

Last Year over 20 Billion Dollars worth of product was sold on Ebay. (Yes Billion with a "B"). Many people are earning $10,000 or more selling on Ebay. Many more would like to sell on Ebay but they face that big hurdle - Where Do I find Items to sell on Ebay. Here are the 11 Best Places to Find Items to sell on E-Bay.

1 - Garage Sales

The Strategy that works best with Garage Sales is stop by at the end of the day and offer to buy all the merchandise they have left. You can often spend $25 - $50 and then resell on Ebay for $500 or more.

  • Why is this a very difficult way to make money on eBay? - Because for every item you spend the time to find at a garage sale you must perform several time consuming steps before that single item can be sold on eBay. Each item must be evaluated, cleaned, tested, described, photographed, categorized, listed and stored. This is a lot of time invested in each item purchased at "Garage Sales", and that time is multiplied by a factor of however many items you purchase in that lot for $50. Therefore, for each 20 item lot you purchase for $50, you will spend approximately 20 hours of your time getting those items listed on eBay. How much is your time worth? Lets say you value your time at a very low $10 per hour, now your investment in these 20 items is worth in excess of $250, not including the time or gas money spent in finding the original "Garage Sale". Will each lot or haul from these "Garage Sales" net even one item which will return your investment in time and cash? Will all of the items sell on the first listing on eBay? How much more money will you invest in eBay fee's and charges to sell these used cast off "Garage Sale" items? - Garage Saleing is a fun pass-time for the retired and a possible business endeavor for people who work at Flea Markets, but for eBay it is a losing proposition. Suggesting that eBay sellers should source product using this method is similar to suggesting to gamblers that they can get rich by playing bingo.

What eBay is… is… a revenue stream and an advertising venue with incredible SEO advantages for any business! Derek Gehl and the Internet Marketing Center Agree

Last weekend I attended a seminar put on by the Internet Marketing Center.  The seminar is geared towards selling a information product/course originally developed by Corey Rudl and now run by Derek Gehl.  The sales pitch was a bit long and overdone but the information gained while sitting in the audience was well worth the endless pitch.

Most of what I learned was in the areas of SEO and keyword targeting for long sales letter websites. But there was a good explanation included about why businesses should look at involving themselves in eBay as a traffic generation technique.  Of course the "real" information is included in the course material (for sale at the unbelievable one time price of...)

The gist of what they say is correct even though I would not consider most of the Derek Gehl eBay course information up to date or even advanced (Most of what they teach is basic techniques which can be found on the eBay help pages).  They are on point with the concept that eBay is not a good avenue towards developing a primary source of income for anyone, not even a business...

What eBay is... is... a revenue stream and an advertising venue with incredible SEO advantages for any business!

What Derek Gehl says about eBay should be read and understood by every business owner in America... Continue reading “What eBay is… is… a revenue stream and an advertising venue with incredible SEO advantages for any business! Derek Gehl and the Internet Marketing Center Agree” »
