New Direction, Future for All Business Auctions – Reviews Anyone?

New plans are in the works for....

All Business Auctions

All Business Auctions

All Business Auctions and

All Business Auctions Blog

... these are two of my original websites.

All Business Auctions: Was the home base of my consignment business and then it became a provider of eBay related third party software and eBay stores design services.

All Business Auctions website gave me the impetus to learn how to create websites in house.

This became a priority at the time, simply because outsourcing the creation of our website was a nightmare. I went through so many local developers to get the job done, after two years of frustration and lost money I worked with my partner to develop the site in house.  We learned a lot during the process of building AllBusinessAuctions.com on Joomla! This experience gave me a real passion for Content Management Systems and brought a whole new direction and focus to my business.  The blog was started as a project to see how well WordPress could perform (I had a blogspot blog at the time)and to learn how the addition of a blog to an existing domain will bring additional organic traffic to the main website. The one two punch worked and would have been an incredible combination if it had been implemented two years prior when I originally commissioned the project with outside developers.

Since the main site was finalized much has changed in our business. The consignment operations on eBay have ceased, we are no longer a Trading Post or a Trading Assistant registered with eBay.  Changes in the landscape of third party eBay management software providers have impacted our ability to provide the AuctionLogic software and still make a reasonable profit, therefore we have ceased those operations as well.

With the changes over the last two years at eBay (much documented here and in many other online publications), running an eBay centric service company became a tenuous and formidable challenge.  One that really tested my loyalty to all that I believed about the opportunity that eBay had presented to both myself, and my clients.  It was and is difficult to think of the effort and time dedicated to an eBay only business plan.  Looking back now it seems obvious that it was pure folly to base an entire business plan upon the whims of another company.  In actuality I did not see it that way at the time because I had built All Business Auctions on the vision that we would represent several different third party eBay providers. The idea was sound when eBay had a positive growth curve, but after the eBay marketplace changed, so the interest from small businesses.

We moved on to form iBusinessLogic another service company more broadly based Internet and Web development company offering web site hosting, Content Management System web development, WordPress development, implementation and training in addition to representing many of the same third party brands in the eBay space as did All Business Auctions in the past.  iBusinessLogic is not dependent upon eBay for its revenue stream but we still have clients from the All Business Auctions period who depend upon us to help them to understand the changing landscape of eBay and in many cases to help them focus on creating a company centric branded presence on the Internet.

These changes have left me with a quandary about what to do with the All Business Auctions name and the two sites associated with it.  The blog has experienced good traffic from the start and has been linked to from sites around the Internet.  As anyone who has studied how WordPress blogs bring in organic traffic knows, the regular addition of content is key to maintaining a healthy blog.  What to write about when eBay is no longer the focus for the brand All Business Auctions? It has been a quandary only accentuated by the expansion of iBusinessLogic and the client work we have been blessed with since changing our focus.

Blog for Business – Does your company need a blog?

ABABlog Logo

As I was working on this blogs transition to our own hosting and a new wordpress theme... to: www.allbusinessauctions.com/blog ....

I started to think about all of the businesses in the world who could benefit by blogging. I came to the conclusion that there is not a single business I am familiar with which could not benefit by establishing a company blog...

Blogs are simply an amazing way to get your name and information recognized throughout the world. There are many reasons why blogs are beneficial...

  • Fastest way to get your site indexed by the search engines
  • Best way to increase your rankings in the search engines - fresh content is king
  • Gives your audience (customers) a feel for what you do and how you do it. Write your blog as though you were talking directly to your customers.
  • Quickest way to get your new information, idea, products known in the world.

If you have not really caught on to the "blogosphere" thing yet, don't think your too late because blogging is still in it's infancy and your company still has time to get in to the mix.

While our blog story here at All Business Auctions may not be typical... and I can not promise your company will have the same experience when establishing a blog... I would like to share a quick run down or the positive results we have experienced since starting this free wordpress.com blog less than 90 days ago.

  1. Learned volumes about the blogosphere and how a single post in a wordpress blog can be indexed by google in less than 12 hours.
  2. Gained recognition among like minded business owners in our field.
  3. Became known as a source of information by major news organizations. (blog post: Quoted in the New York Times technology section).
  4. Gained international business inquiries through blogging about relevant news in our field. (Inquiry about eBay Stores design work from Romania)
  5. Won a small blogging award - first place SEOLogs blog contest
  6. Broadened our company appeal by detailing just a few of the services we can provide and simply writing about the benefits of those services.
  7. With the move to our own hosting and attaching the blog to our AllBusinessAuctions.com website we will increase the exposure for our company and increase the traffic on our Joomla based website. Fresh relevant content is indexed quickly in the search engines and is the most powerful for SEO tool in the toolbox.

I could increase the list above but after only 90 days online with a "free" wordpress.com blog, I think these are significant points.

Should you look into blogging for your business? While some people blog as a business your company or small business could benefit greatly by blogging for business.

It's a whole lot less expensive than pay per click advertising, or the yellow pages and may not replace either for your business needs... But unlimited indexed content with your company name attached, could not hurt!

New York Times Journalist Learns about Information Marketing on eBay

The New York Times Learns about Information Marketing on eBay

Now - How can your company Benefit from Information Marketing?

The NY Times article by David Gallagher, quoted below is an interesting tale about the sale of a public-domain information product by a information marketing niche eBay seller to a NY Times Journalist.  The story is more than "interesting" if your business is looking for ways to gain exposure, boost revenue, find new customers, or retain older customers.

Public-Domain information products are sold worldwide via eBay and on numerous niche websites. Could your business benefit from information marketing, especially if you own the rights to the information?  Information has always been a valuable commodity, the NY Times article drives home that point in a way which few may first realize.  If a small movie made in the 1950's about a small town in America, which in itself was an advertising vehicle at the time, is worth something to someone somewhere... What do you have in your files which may be worth someones cold hard cash?

What can you take from your company files and turn into a revenue producing information product? Do you have a technical manual for a widely sold and still in use product which is no longer in production?  If you have the rights to that manual you should consider digitizing it and offering it for sale in a eBay store.  Do you have a procedures or sales training manual written specifically for your company or by your company which you no longer use? Digitize and sell that information!

These Information products are sold every day by major manufacturers of appliances, electronics, machinery, automobiles etc etc... Look for an owners manual for your any of your electronics or appliances in your home and you will find them for sale, usually directly on the manufacturers website. These manuals are now being delivered electronically and some companies charge a fee for the information.  This "service" provides continual revenue for the manufacturer. The income from the sale of digitally delivered owners manuals adds up to a significant number at the end of the year.

The goal is not necessarily to make millions of dollars from old information in your files (although that could be possible, depending upon your information). The goal is to gain exposure for your company through your eBay store and to gain new customers by introducing them to your company via your expert information products. If a consumer believes in the information enough to buy it, that consumer has taken the first step towards buying another product or service from your company.

The information products you can sell are low cost advertising vehicles.  They will include more than the specific information the buyer purchases, these information products will also include your present day company message and links to your website.  There is so much to be gained by using this unique and original method of advertising and really very little to lose.  By selling outdated or public-domain information to consumers your company gains a new customer and an opportunity to sell that customer newer and better products or services.  The consumer gains knowledge previously unattainable and a confidence in your company he never had before.

Win Win!

Information products can be sold completely on auto-pilot. Technology is available which will instantly deliver the digital information product to the consumer upon payment. The only significant investment in information products is in the creation of these products. Once they are created and digitized the cost of production for digital information products is zero.  Other forms of delivery such as DVD or CD have associated costs, but those costs are minimal when compared with the benefit.

On eBay, Some Profit by Selling What’s Free

While scouring eBay for interesting Christmas presents a while back, I found and bought a DVD of a film made in 1954 about my home town of Doylestown, Pa. After it arrived I went searching for more information about it — and found the entire film, available as a free download from the nonprofit Internet Archive. Last Year over 20 Billion Dollars worth of product was sold on Ebay. (Yes Billion with a "B"). Many people are earning $10,000 or more selling on Ebay. 1 - Garage Sales

The Strategy that works best with Garage Sales is stop by at the end of the day and offer to buy all the merchandise they have left. You can often spend $25 - $50 and then resell on Ebay for $500 or more.

  • Why is this a very difficult way to make money on eBay? - Because for every item you spend the time to find at a garage sale you must perform several time consuming steps before that single item can be sold on eBay. Each item must be evaluated, cleaned, tested, described, photographed, categorized, listed and stored. This is a lot of time invested in each item purchased at "Garage Sales", and that time is multiplied by a factor of however many items you purchase in that lot for $50. Therefore, for each 20 item lot you purchase for $50, you will spend approximately 20 hours of your time getting those items listed on eBay. How much is your time worth? Lets say you value your time at a very low $10 per hour, now your investment in these 20 items is worth in excess of $250, not including the time or gas money spent in finding the original "Garage Sale". Will each lot or haul from these "Garage Sales" net even one item which will return your investment in time and cash? Will all of the items sell on the first listing on eBay? How much more money will you invest in eBay fee's and charges to sell these used cast off "Garage Sale" items? - Garage Saleing is a fun pass-time for the retired and a possible business endeavor for people who work at Flea Markets, but for eBay it is a losing proposition. Suggesting that eBay sellers should source product using this method is similar to suggesting to gamblers that they can get rich by playing bingo.

What eBay is… is… a revenue stream and an advertising venue with incredible SEO advantages for any business! Derek Gehl and the Internet Marketing Center Agree

Last weekend I attended a seminar put on by the Internet Marketing Center.  The seminar is geared towards selling a information product/course originally developed by Corey Rudl and now run by Derek Gehl.  The sales pitch was a bit long and overdone but the information gained while sitting in the audience was well worth the endless pitch.

Most of what I learned was in the areas of SEO and keyword targeting for long sales letter websites. But there was a good explanation included about why businesses should look at involving themselves in eBay as a traffic generation technique.  Of course the "real" information is included in the course material (for sale at the unbelievable one time price of...)

The gist of what they say is correct even though I would not consider most of the Derek Gehl eBay course information up to date or even advanced (Most of what they teach is basic techniques which can be found on the eBay help pages).  They are on point with the concept that eBay is not a good avenue towards developing a primary source of income for anyone, not even a business...

What eBay is... is... a revenue stream and an advertising venue with incredible SEO advantages for any business!

What Derek Gehl says about eBay should be read and understood by every business owner in America... Continue reading “What eBay is… is… a revenue stream and an advertising venue with incredible SEO advantages for any business! Derek Gehl and the Internet Marketing Center Agree” »
