Bonanzle Action Club Controversy – Evil Empire or Just Grass Roots Social Marketing

There is a controversy brewing and this time it is not really about eBay - or is it?

It seems that Debbie Levitt CEO of ASWAS, an eBay Stores designer and consulting company based in Boston, MA and a personal friend, has come out very strongly against the grass roots marketing efforts of Bonanzle.com.  A Prominent blogger and also a friend, Henrietta of the Red Ink Diary has responded quite directly to Debbie's take on the Bonanzle Action Club.

Henrietta has been a friend to Bonanzle.com since the beginning, I don't think she is a member of the BAC, but could be. It is a pretty small club of only 50 people when weighed against the 30,000 members of Bonanzle.  Yet the effects of its political style grass roots effort to get out the word about the site seem to have gained some attention in eBay circles (where Debbie Levitt is a big swimmer).

Internet Business Initiative 2009 – Customer Service is Paramount

2008 is a year quickly fading from view, some would rather forget the past 12 months and others have reason to remember the year past with fondness.

Of all the merchants considered as either the winners or losers in 2008 they each can take a look back and see one business tactic that binds them together, for better or worse.

Customer Service is the Difference

The winners of 2008 include companies like Amazon.com, Zappos.com and Apple.  These outstanding companies have one thing in common, the perception (at least) that they provide outstanding customer service to their customers.

  • I can say that I have personally done business this holiday season with all three of these high quality merchants and they all provide outstanding service from the buyers perspective.
  • I was pleased with each and every transaction and in each incidence I felt as if I had gotten the better part of the deal.  Is that because I got a discount?
  • No, Apple made me pay what everyone else pays, so did Zappos and in most cases Amazon.  The difference was that I received what I bargained for and more... I felt good about the transactions in each case, people like to feel good.

Wednesday 1:14, Firehose of Traffic and Comment Followup

Today is Tuesday (Happy Veterans Day to all who served)... many have wondered what the heck is Scott talking about with this silly slogan...

It's a great question!  To tell the truth, I wonder sometimes myself...

It is not a quote for the book of Genesis and it is not some sort of weird eBook pitch... "sighs of relief", all around.

Wednesday at 1:14 is the start of something new.  New for me, new for you and new for this space.

Many of my regular readers know I have been part of the meteroic rise to stardom of one very interesting fellow known to many as ColderICE. 

John Lawson is what I call him, but he can have a cool handle if he likes, it fits his personality and his message.  (Maybe I should have a moniker like that? Hmmm.... What would I be... WarmerFudge?)

John is a Platinum Powerseller on eBay and also has his own website at 3rd Power Outlet http://www.3rdPowerOutlet.com. He brought hip hop merchandise to eBay and has had great success with this very finely crafted niche market.  John is a pillar of the PESA community and he has brought a fresh new look to both eBay and eCommerce. 

 John Lawson is a straight shooter, a matter of fact kind of guy and he has little time for BS artists or scammers.  I wonder why I like him...

John gained a greater audience, or dare I say his very first national audience through my insistence that he guest post here on the Trading Assistant Journal.  You can review his guest post writings and other mentions on this site here.

John has since started his own eCommerce blog or videoblog and named it ColderICE.  

He seems to be more comfortable in front of the video camera than at a keyboard and I am less excited about doing video blogs than writing. 

To each his own. 

We have remained steady friends since the day we met thanks to Scot Wingo and his Channel Advisor Catalyst conference. Some may be surprised at John and I being friends if they had followed our political battle on Twitter over the last several months.  Yet, we never have let the politics cloud our respect for one another, even in the heat of battle.

John and I are very different people, yet we have a great deal in common.  We each come from very different backgrounds and may have never met if it were not for a common interest.  That interest is making money on the Internet. 

Our friendship is based upon more than this one thing however. 

John Lawson and I are each very interested in, and good at, looking at the big picture when it come to the overall business of selling online. More importantly, we each, in our own way, have found ways to share what we think is important information with the world through blogs and videos.  We get a lot of fulfillment from helping people to understand what we wish we had understood when we each started. 

So, back to this Wednesday 1:14 question...

On Wednesday - This Wednesday November 11,2008 @ precisely 1:14 Eastern Standard Time a new Internet talk show and podcast will be born. 

  • No Nonsense

  • No Sugarcoating

  • No self promotion

The idea is simple, No BS eCommerce, eBay and eBusiness.  We won't be selling and DVD sets and we won't be pulling any punches when it comes to sharing our opinions about anything to do with the industry.  We know that as co-hosts we will not always agree on every subject but this is also what we think will make us unique. 

The show is scheduled to air on Talkshoe every Wednesday @ 1:14 in the afternoon.  Why 1:14?  I will let John tell you that... but it has it's own significance.

The website will have a email form available for all of you to send us your questions, topic suggestions, or other interesting and useful information. The show will only be on for 1/2 hour per week so we will not get to everyone's questions, but be assured... if its a good one, we will discuss it live.

Why "Agents of Revenue" as a name? 

We just kinda landed there while discussing the concept of the show.  We want to impart information which will help people produce what really counts, and that's real honest cold hard cash - or positive revenue. 

We also want to enforce a no BS atmosphere and be matter of fact about what it takes to become revenue positive in eBusiness.  Part of the show may be dedicated to John and I duking it out in a point counter point style on some subjects but overall we just want to bring a fresh, no nonsense perspective to the space.

The fedora hats are a Blues Brothers or Elliott Ness reference, they signify our goal of being straight shooters and honest advisors. 

OK the Blues Brothers were neither, but they were very cool...  they wanted to help the Sister, and they were ultimately very good at what they did for a living.   

Elliot Ness just got the bad guys and he was Untouchable...

Why is WordPress the Best? Constant Innovation and Great Performance!

Ok, Ok... I will admit it!  I am a WordPress fan - boy!

Why?

Because WordPress is just so darn good and as a developer I can make it perform for clients like almost no other CMS platform. 

Joomla! is another great CMS (Content management system) and we love working with it, but for pure ease of use and unbelievable client (User) satisfaction, WordPress is very difficult to beat.  

From basic eCommerce  to business oriented informational and corporate websites to personal blogs, real estate sales, or news magazines. WordPress as a CMS is the king of customization.

Cliff is a long time eBay seller and now a new Bonanzle Booth owner. Cliff knows his business and he also knows how to get the most out of eBay and Amazon, now he is tackling the world of Bonanzle booth sales (in his spare time).

When iBusinessLogic announced a special offer to Bonanzle Booth owners to build a website/blog with a Bonanzle product feed (See: Bonanzle Website Offer), Cliff was the very first to jump onboard!

Cliff plans on using this new website/blog in conjunction with his existing website to bring in long tail search traffic to both his website, and his Bonanzle and eBay operations. Cliff is an expert in his field of memorabilia and movie collectibles. He will write informative and interesting blog posts about the history of Hollywood along with informative articles about the great finds he has in his inventory of thousands of unique collectibles.

Our first design for Cliff's new website/blog looks very nostalgic, we certainly hope he likes what we have done. But if he needs a tweak or two, or a completely new look, we will make it right for him.

We have other projects in the works for Bonanzle sellers and I think it will build a great community over at Bonanzle if more sellers join in with their own blogs/websites designed to not only promote their individual businesses, but also the entire Bonanzle community.

The more outside links leading back to Bonanzle, the better sales will be for each and every Bonanzle merchant. This is one way to build traffic for a selling venue through a grass roots effort. With every Bonanzle merchant who has a desire to not only increase their own business, but also add to the entire health of the site as a whole, sending traffic from sites like Cliff's new Bonanzle focused website/blog, the selling venue will grow in both sellers and buyers at an even more impressive rate.

If you have been considering building a website to promote your own Bonanzle or Etsy, or Online Auction or even eBay sales... Just get out there and do it! The biggest step is the first one, and we all know after that, its all just a matter of following through.

Last night in my car I was driving and listening to Seth Godin on a  podcast....

Some of you may be unfamiliar with what a "podcast" is or why anyone would listen to one?  Podcasts are recordings of events, shows or seminars and/or the occasional sales pitch.  Some podcasts are similar to talk radio shows with live callers hosted by a main host and sometimes a co-host. 

Today's "radio show" has been moved off of the airwaves and into your iPod or other mp3 device.  Thousands of these podcasts are available, mostly for free, in the iTunes store. Far ranging topics are available as podcasts on iTunes and in other places around the Internet.  I usually focus on the Internet marketing and ecommerce titles but also download free photoshop training, "This Week in Tech" podcasts from Leo Laport, John C. Dvorak's "Cranky Geeks" financial news and a few more.  Topics are plentiful and inspiration is included. 

I listen to these podcasts to try and learn something while doing things which would be unproductive otherwise.  I have learned a great deal just from this free resource and I have been fortunate enough to forge more than one friendship with people I would never have met because of podcasting.  Continue reading “Advertising & Promotion and Seth Godin – New Marketing” »

External Industry Perception – Opinion Matters – eBay

My recent schedule has taken me away from the deep depths of eBay polices and events. This can be a good thing... Anytime one can take a step back and look at life and business from a different perspective, I believe they should seize the opportunity.

My most recent sojourn into the world outside of eBay took me to the very interesting, yet almost unknown, industry of automotive recycling.

Yes, I know... most of us non-recyclers call it by a different name and frankly we rarely think about the positive impact on our environment and economy that auto recycling, or what we call  "Junkyards" (bad word inside the industry) has in America.

At first I did not "get" why the term "Junkyards" was considered not-PC (Politically Correct), but after attending the 65th annual Automotive Recyclers Association convention and expo in Kansas City, Missouri, I have a much better understanding.

Automotive recycling as an industry has come a long way in technology, in standards and most importantly in environmental protection since this national organization was formed in 1943.

From systems designed to extract every ounce of fluid from a wrecked vehicle to machines which automatically extract copper from the miles of wires in every car while saving the plastic insulation for re-use, the technology changes have been enormous.  I personally was amazed at the live demonstrations held at Midway Auto Parts in Kansas City on chilly evening during the exposition.

The yard was clean and extraordinarily well organized, all of the wrecked vehicles had been sorted and were laid out in various stages of the recycling process. No huge stacks of rusty hulks in this yard, most all of the cars I saw represented recent model years, they even had a used car lot in the front of the operation with some very clean looking late model automobiles. This place looked more like a new car dealership than what previously ill-informed outsiders like myself might have called it. This was a recycling facility, not a "Junk yard"

I have to agree with the new terminology, there was no presence of "Junk" here. This was pure recycling, down to the last ounce of steel. I was told this is not uncommon in the new era of auto recycling.  It seems that with the right combination of technology and training more of an automobile or truck can be recycled than ever before.  The industry as a whole has seen, both from a profit and from the environmental impact perspective, modernizing is the only way to excel.

By now my regular readers are wondering where eBay enters into all of this?

The eBay connection starts with Taia Cesana of East Coast Auto Salvage. Taia hired my company iBusinessLogic to build a new website for their family owned auto recycling facility in Higganum, Connecticut. I met Taia at the Channel Adviser Catalyst conference in North Carolina. We have worked together on a plan to upgrade both East Coast's eBay sales operations and their website since Catalyst.

Taia and her dad Bill are very active members of both the ARA and CAR (Connecticut Auto Recyclers Association)associations. iBusinessLogic is now building a new website for CAR as a direct result of our work on the East Coast site.

Taia and Bill of East Coast Auto Salvage believe in finding the best solutions for industry challenges.

One of the challenges in the auto recycling industry is perception.  The best way to combat problems with perception is with information. Today's information leader is the Internet and building an information rich website is no longer a luxury for any business, it is a necessity.

Many of the websites auto recycling yards present to the public are developed by the industry leading inventory solutions providers. These include Hollander, Car-Parts.com and Inventory Technology Systems among others.

The original East Coast Auto Salvage site was provided by ITS.  Taia Cesana wanted to provide a more modern look and offer much more information on the East Coast Auto Salvage website than a parts search and location engine. Yet without the parts location and inventory searches provided by ITS and Car-Part, her website would not hold much value to her customers.

We solved the problem by simply taking the information served by ITS and inserting it within the new website and we also added an important feature by importing all of the East Coast Auto Salvage's eBay listings directly into their new website.

The new website we developed for East Coast Auto Salvage is designed to not only provide easy access to parts information but also give the public a more comprehensive view of their business in an attractive and straightforward package.  I am very honored Taia and Bill thought enough of the job we did for them to ask us to share our ideas with the rest of the industry.

I did not expect to find much eBay related news at an Auto Recycling exposition. In fact, it seemed when I mentioned eBay to any of the attendees or exhibitors on the expo floor, the tone of the conversations almost immediately became suspicious.  I was not selling eBay, I simply was asking how or if any of these businesses were integrating eBay as a sales venue for the massive amount of used automotive, truck and motorcycle parts they had on hand.

The overall impression seemed to be that eBay was a mysterious and unknown quantity. These business people, all of whom seem to be looking at Internet sales and ecommerce in a new light, were not really sure if eBay could help them sell parts.

As an Industry, I would say that Auto Recyclers could use eBay to a great advantage, if they could just figure out how.

To be honest, many of these cutting edge (in their industry) business people have not yet totally grasped the power of Internet marketing.  Most auto recycling yard websites provide simple location information and a parts location search with very little or no additional information or ecommerce capabilities.  This is a missed marketing opportunity on a massive scale.

It seems that I am not the only person at the exposition who believes eBay could help auto recyclers move used auto parts.

Terry Lindell of Inventory Technology Systems announced what could be an incredible tool for auto recyclers worldwide in a presentation explaining his new VINterchange inventory system.  VINterchange aims to turn the auto recycling inventory process upside down (or right-side up - depending on your point of view) with a new way to automatically evaluate and inventory the parts from wrecked vehicles.

It is a long story but it seems that the auto recyclers and the auto industry have been working with two entirely different numbering systems and ways of inventorying parts. The VINterchange system is designed to bring the auto recycling industry more in line with OEM manufactures VIN system, providing actual OEM part numbers to the public.

The presentation was jam packed full of information, I will say that as an industry outsider, the new system seemed to make incredible sense from the perspective of an Internet marketer such as myself.  When these recycling yards provide OEM auto part numbers to the public, on the Internet, finding the parts will become much easier for the consumer. Selling those same parts to the world via the Internet will become a vital part of every recyclers business.

My ears really perked up When Terry Lindell transitioned into the eBay portion of his presentation. I have not seen how it works, but apparently ITS's VINterchange system has the capability of automatically populating eBay listings with all of the OEM parts information needed to sell these parts to the public in a fast and efficient manner.  This could revolutionize the used auto parts industry on eBay motors.

I have a net meeting scheduled with ITS to get a first hand look at how this new system will handle uploading parts data to eBay, to tell the truth I am very excited about the possibilities.  I know first hand from East Coast Auto Salvage that these parts move well on eBay yet the time it takes to process the eBay listings is a pain point for Taia Cesana at East Coast.

If ITS has come up with a solution which not only catalogs all of the profitable parts from a wrecked vehicle and assigns those parts the proper OEM part numbers but can also feed eBay and/or eCommerce that same catalog of inventory, I think the used auto parts business will find a much easier path to ecommerce than ever before.

In Summary

  • eBay still suffers a problem of perception, in that it is a painful process to utilize eBay as a sales venue, from established industries such as auto recycling.
  • eCommerce is the next logical step for the Auto Recycling industry
  • It all starts with information and the proper aggregation and display of that information for both eBay and outside industries like auto recycling.
  • If the auto recycling industry continues to develop methods of standardizing information the industry and consumers will both win. In effect parts will become worth more than the price of steel and consumers will buy those parts when they have a clear path to finding them on either Google or eBay.

Think of an early 1990's AOL chat room with dozens of updates per minute available to everyone in the world. Only, as a user of Twitter, one may pick and choose who's "updates" they want to follow. Conversely other users may choose to follow you, even if they do not know you. 

These features make Twitter unique, simply due the fact that users can craft the experience by selecting whom they follow.

Interested in Internet marketing and the Tech world? Simply follow icons in these industries and fellow Twitter users who also follow the thought leaders. The same goes for almost any interest or industry you can think of. Transparency is all part of Twitter, not only can you follow interesting people, but you can also see who they follow and do likewise.

Tamebay's Sue Bailey – Distilling The Truth About eBay

Sue Bailey...

...of Tamebay fame is not known by any means as an eBay basher or even a detractor.  She has been promoting the eBay system of selling on Tamebay.com for a long time.  Readers of the Trading Assistant Journal may not be familiar with Tamebay but in the eBay space, this UK based blog is required reading.

Today Sue Bailey posted an article on Tamebay which in my mind presents the view of global sellers on eBay in a very succinct and reasonable way.  Sue touches on almost every aspect of the frustration and the disappointment eBay sellers are feeling.  Her points are well intended and in my view quite accurate.

We all have been saying eBay is not the only game in town any longer, Sue has distilled this point into a pure and mineral free statement of the facts.
