Online Auction's Chris Fain Plan for the Future: Charge Buyers $8.00 a Month

Online Auction.com CEO Chris Fain, during a live Internet Radio show presented by ECMRN (e-commerce Marketing Radio Network) , detailed a plan to charge buyers $8.00 a month subscription for access to buy from the auction venue in the future. (He did clearly state this plan would not be implemented anytime soon, but from the excitement in his voice when describing the subscription based buyer access, it sounds like more than a passing idea).

Chris compared the plan to purchasing a membership in Sam's Club or Costco, where buyers will join the venue to gain access to goods and services.  Additionally, Chris Fain envisions a day when OnlineAuction.com becomes a venue which surpasses eBay in volume of listed items and even exceeds eBay's revenue model.

Interesting vision of the future, I will say that before buyers would pay for access to listings on any online marketplace, I think some sort of extraordinary value proposition will have to be developed. What can OLA offer buyers, beyond a place to hunt for bargains, which will inspire them to pay a monthly subscription fee?  Possibly bulk access to other services?  Discounts on web hosting?  A Buying service much like a professional gift buying service, available to those buyers who do not want to search listings for the best price/value? No indication from Chris Fain, but the possibilities are certainly interesting to ponder.

What would inspire you to pay a subscription fee for access to OnlineAuction.com?

In other news from OLA

  • Sellers will soon be given access to Reliabid protection. (Follow the link to learn more about the Reliabid service.
  • Also The World Lingo Translation Service is now offered to sellers for a small fee. The service automatically translates listings into multiple languages.

  • In less than 10 days time, OnlineAuction.com will offer sellers a fixed price listing option. This should help sellers get more search engine traffic to the items listed on OLA.  Additional plans include OLA Ad buys from Google and other Search Engine marketing efforts.

It seems like OLA has a plan for the future based upon providing sellers value for the low fees OLA charges for access to the venue. Valuing the sellers as a resource to build upon the initial success at OLA is a nice approach.

Contribute to an Article about eBay Competition, Amazon, Etsy, OnlineAuction or eCommerce Website?

WritingI am very honored to have been commissioned to research and write an article for a major publication.

This article will focus upon the general interest and the genuine need of eBay centric online merchants to learn about options available to them beyond eBay.

We all know and have discussed the evolution of the eBay system into a new and as yet undefined platform. Much of the old eBay that many merchants relied upon and understood has changed or will change in the near future.

eBay remains a powerhouse of eCommerce traffic and will remain so for some time.  Yet, it has become apparent  to most merchants in the eBay community that relying completely on a single venue may not be the best business plan.  eBay merchants are hungry for information pertaining to diversification of risk and secondary channels.

The question remains, and it seems to be an often asked question... Where do I go, outside of eBay?  What platforms should merchants look to for merchandising inventory online? Continue reading “Contribute to an Article about eBay Competition, Amazon, Etsy, OnlineAuction or eCommerce Website?” »

The OLA Rummage sale has created quite a groundswell of interest, not only from the sellers on the OnlineAuction.com site but from new and excited buyers coming to OnlineAuction.com for the very first time. The Rummage sale at last count : There are 6827 Auctions under the  - May 1-8  Rummage Sale  category.

The grassroots organizers of the OLA rummage sale, prior to the start of the event, had hoped to inspire their fellow sellers to list 10 items each for this special event 7 Day rummage sale.  The thought was to recruit 200 or so sellers to list valuable items on OLA as no reserve .99 cent auctions. This would in turn populate the rummage sale category with at least 2000 items, gaining interest from new buyers, sellers and media alike.  Apparently the organizers struck a chord with the sellers on the site because they have more than tripled the amount of listings they had hoped to get in the RUMMAGE SALE category.

eBayeBay is making changes

The recent changes in eBay have been well documented and yet more are sure to be announced in the coming months. These changes could be positive for the eBay community as a whole (removing under performing sellers) but some sellers on the site are bound to be looking for other options.

Some sellers appear to be thinking the changes on eBay may not fit into their specific business plan, or the sellers may find that their business practices no longer fit into eBay's new plan.  A majority of the eBay sellers will continue to succeed on eBay...

In any case, it is always prudent to be aware of other available channels offering auction and fixed priced goods to the public. Diversification is a meaningful term used by more than stockbrokers.

No matter where you list your items for sale, as a seller it is in your best interest to promote your own merchandise online. Just placing an item in a channel such as eBay and hoping it will sell is not the most effective marketing plan. There are many ways to send traffic to your own merchandise, no matter if it is listed on a standalone eCommerce website, eBay or one of the other channels such as OnlineAuction.com.

Promote your own listings with these simple suggestions... Continue reading “Promote Your Products Online – eBay – OnlineAuction.com Blogs – Forums – Rummage Sales” »

eBay Competitors – Where to go After DSRs or Best Match?

The winds of change have been blowing...

We all know eBay is moving to a more retail like atmosphere. If your niche or business model does not fit into a retail like experience for the new eBay buyers, as a seller you will soon find it very difficult to survive on eBay.

This is a good thing for a majority of the large titanium PowerSellers now found on the eBay site. It may not be the roots of eBay and it may not be what eBay has promoted over the last 10-12 years, but this is the climate of change you have been hearing about. Big corporations change, evolve, morph themselves into entirely new entities all of the time.

This most recent movement by eBay to a more retail like experience should not be a surprise to anyone. In fact, I have preached here and elsewhere that all sellers on eBay should become more business like and find sources of supply outside of Garage Sales and Church Bazaars...

To survive in business, you must have a plan. eBay seems to be working towards shaping every eBay sellers' business plan to fit a model which will help eBay as much as it helps the majority of sellers they want to keep. One does wonder...what will happen to those sellers they are no longer interested in retaining?

Free Shipping is part of eBay's plan to attract buyers (see Randy Smythe's Blog post today in My Blog Utopia) they plan on encouraging sellers to join with them in this plan by advantaging those sellers who offer free shipping in the Best Match results for search.

If this type of "encouragement" does not fit into your business plan - either because you do not have products which can be easily shipped for free - or simply because you see no margin after offering free shipping after raising your price to accomodate the higher cost, then you may be looking for alternatives to selling on eBay...

OnlineAuction.com - Rummage Sales and Internet Radio Shows...

As some of you may know, I have been co-hosting a segment on the ebay & Beyond Basics to Business Internet radio show & Podcast hosted by Dave White.  The show is recorded live every Saturday between 10:00 AM and Noon EST.

Last Saturday ( April 19, 2008 ) the show focused on the OnlineAuction.com Internet auction website with interviews of the CEO of OnlineAuction.com Chris Fain and a selling member of the site Karen "callmemomo" Hammond.

OnlineAuction.com, also known by the acronym OLA, has grown steadily for some time and seems to be in a great position to capitalize upon the recent upheaval within the eBay sellers community.  OnlineAuction.com currently has over 13 million items listed for sale on the site.

The sellers on OnlineAuction seem to appreciate the feeling of community and the relatively low fee structure. They say OnlineAuction.com is a better place than eBay for them because selling on the site is "fun again" just as they remember eBay selling from years past. The goal of this Rummage Sale is to draw more traffic from the Internet and compete more closely with eBay.

Karen is one of the grass roots organizers of an event called the OnlineAuction.com Rummage Sale.  The Rummage Sale has been organized by individual sellers on the site and not by the site itself. The OnlineAuction.com management is fully behind this groundswell of involvement from its sellers and they endorse the Rummage Sale which will be launched May 1st. Consignment Listing – Diamond Ring – Will it Sell? eBay or OnlineAuction.com

Consignment item of the day - in our eBay Store

And Listed on ONLINEAUCTION.COM

Obviously this is a very attractive, high quality diamond ring. We have the original appraisal and paperwork; it is owned by a long term and dear client - it was her wedding ring stone and has since been reset in this stunning dinner ring setting. Total weight is now 2.8 carats of fine diamonds and as you can see, this is no knock-off.

I had it appraised by a local gemologist in Clearwater, Florida, who I have known personally for 20 years and who has been a part of a family business in fine jewelery locally for over 40 years. His appraisal of this diamond and setting together is included in the description, but his official opinion places the value in the $35,000.00 range.

Our client is ready to sell for $22,500...

Will it Sell as an eBay Stores Item? Or Will it sell as an OnlineAuction.com Listing

Lets see..
